Mouna Hamitouche
Mouna Hamitouche moved to Islington from Algeria in the 1990s. She became the first Algerian-born woman councillor in the UK in 2006 after being elected to represent Barnsbury. She later because the first Algerian-born Mayor in the UK, serving as Mayor of Islington from 2010 to 2011. In 2012, Hamitouche received an MBE for services to the community and local government.
During her year in office, Hamitouche aimed to raise money for Islington Play Association.
“As a mother I’m only too aware of how the IPA have been improving life for children for more than 30 years,”
She also petitioned for free school meals and has campaigned for rights for asylum seekers.
Hamitouche is a formidable pursuant of justice and cares deeply about Islington residents, especially children.
