Caroline Chisholm (1808-1877)
Caroline Chisholm lives in many places across the world, including Islington. Nicknames ‘The Emigrants Friend’, Chisholm has experienced the difficult and dangerous conditions of vulnerable immigrant women and girls and dedicated herself to setting up schools and organisations to help them. In 1849 she set up the Family Colonisation Loan Society from her home in Islington. The society aimed to support safe emigration by lending people half the cost of travel to Australia. Chisholm gave evidence in front of the House of Lords twice, acting as one of the few female voices in Westminster, to gain support for the scheme. by 1854, the society has helped more than 3000 people emigrate.
Chisholm is an internationally claimed hero who changed the lives of thousands of vulnerable people. Her blue plaque in Islington reminds us of our duty to help others from all backgrounds, and our unity as human beings.
